Method
- Step 1: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package directions, until al dente. Drain spaghetti, reserving about one cup of pasta water.
- Step 2: While spaghetti is cooking, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced onion and cook for 5-7 minutes, until tender and translucent.
- Step 3: Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more, until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
- Step 4: Add crushed tomatoes to the skillet. Season generously with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- Step 5: Add cooked spaghetti to the tomato sauce. Mix gently to coat the pasta. If the sauce is too thick, add some reserved pasta water until desired consistency is reached.
- Step 6: Serve immediately, garnished with fresh basil and grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
Notes
You can add vegetables such as mushrooms, zucchini, or bell peppers to your tomato sauce. For a spicier touch, add a little chili. And if you don't have fresh basil, dried basil will do!
