Method
- Step 1: In a large bowl, combine ground meat, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, chopped garlic, parsley (if used), salt, and pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly until everything is well combined. Form meatballs of uniform size (about 4-5 cm in diameter).
- Step 2: Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large, thick-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, in batches if necessary, until they are well cooked inside (about 8-10 minutes total). Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
- Step 3: In the same skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until tender and lightly browned (about 5-7 minutes).
- Step 4: Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir constantly for 1 minute to form a light roux.
- Step 5: Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Let the sauce simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until it thickens slightly.
- Step 6: Stir in the heavy cream, then season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer for another 2-3 minutes, until the sauce is creamy and hot.
- Step 7: Return the cooked meatballs to the skillet with the sauce. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes, so that the meatballs are well coated in sauce. Serve immediately.
Notes
Feel free to personalize this recipe! You can add chopped spinach to the meatballs, use red wine in the sauce, or replace button mushrooms with shiitake mushrooms for a more pronounced flavor. For a spicy touch, add a little red pepper. To ensure perfectly cooked meatballs, make sure not to pack them too tightly when forming them. If you're short on time, you can prepare the meatballs in advance and store them in the refrigerator until cooking. For an even thicker sauce, you can add a teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with a little cold water before adding the cream. This recipe is best when eaten immediately. However, you can store leftovers in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat gently in a skillet or microwave.
